  1. Possible epigenetic damage.

“Exposure to IR can induce genome instability in the germline, and is further associated with transgenerational genomic instability in the offspring of exposed males. The exact molecular mechanisms of transgenerational genome instability have yet to be elucidated, although there is support for it being an epigenetically induced phenomenon.”

    http ://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23577019

“In summary, our results suggest that both localized and whole body parental exposures to IR” [Ionizing Radiation] “result in transgenerational epigenetic instability within the unexposed offspring. ”

“Besides the mutational effects of radiation exposure, there is concern it might also result in modifications of the epigenome. Such aberrations can disrupt normal development and are involved in the progression of numerous diseases, including cancer (Gasser and Li 2011). High doses of radiation (>100.0 cGy) have been shown to cause epigenetic disruption (Kaup, Grandjean et al. 2006; Tamminga, Koturbash et al. 2008; Ilnytskyy, Koturbash et al. 2009), which is necessary for the persistence of radiation-induced genomic instability (Rugo, Mutamba et al. 2011); however, it is presently unclear to what extent LDIR in vivo alters the epigenome. ”

What of the epigenomic effects of internal ionizing irradiation of mitochondric DNA? So far, once again, radiation research involving low dosage, but externally applied.

Remember that mtDNA lack the same enzymic pathways for repair that regular DNA has.

Published research in that area seems lacking.
However; there is one reference i find that DOE is looking into it, and possible treatment.

Quote: “Low dose-low dose rate irradiation leads to long term changes in numbers of mitochondria and mitochondrial genomes”

“The overarching hypotheses of the program projects are that
    1) Mitochondria are a key cellular organelle responsible for coping with radiation stress.
    2) Adaptive low dose radiation treatments, which lead to protection from radiation stress of the challenge dose of radiation, fortify mitochondrial stability and increase mitochondrial biogenesis.
    3) NF-κB protein complexes play a pivotal role in these events. ”

this has been extended till august please SPEAK up people

EPA Requests Comments on Radiation Protection Standards for Nuclear Power Operations
    by Troutman Sanders LLP

On February 4, 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) released an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (“ANOPR”) requesting comments on its Environmental Radiation Protection Standards for Nuclear Power Operations (“Radiation Standards”). The ANOPR seeks input on six main issues to determine how to update the Radiation Standards and what, if any changes should be made.

The Radiation Standards were originally issued in 1977 by the EPA to limit radiation releases from the operation of nuclear power plants and facilities involved in the processing and handling of uranium. However, according to EPA, the Radiation Standards do not incorporate the most up-to-date scientific information, and are ripe for review and possible updates due to the projected growth in nuclear power and scientific and technological advances.

Thank you california native for digging this up ..we need this reposted all over the site .

It would be absolutely dreadful if they get their own way .. And we cannot blame anyone if we don’t try to stop it . ”

    Fukushima: Bad and Getting Worse

IPPNW concludes that Fukushima’s radiation disaster is “far from over”: the destroyed reactors are still unstable; radioactive liquids and gases continuously leak from the complex wreckage; melted fuel and used fuel in quake-damaged cooling pools hold enormous quantities of radioactivity “and are highly vulnerable to further earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons and human error.” Catastrophic releases of radioactivity “could occur at any time and eliminating this risk will take many decades.”

Could there be “teleconnections” in data within ~2 weeks of “nukular” “incident(s)” that aerosolize uNORM (&/or chems.), a minority of which could conceivably travel from one Hemisphere to another?

I seem to vaguely remember something about anomylous readings in Oz or NZ within a time frame of … ??

Near community newsp calls 311 “2011 Fukushima Earthquake”. Must add to “93 lies of nuke” @ np! How’s that for a media mindfuku?

    • sorry, there was an april 2011 fukushima earthquake mag. 6.6, (noted as a 7.0 in the Phys.org linked article below)?

That would have been an aftershock of the March Tohoku Mega-Disaster.
(whispering) Where is the next big aftershock?
They are not schedualed to remove more fuel before 2019 now.
Is TEmPCO not divesting themselves of responsibility any which way they can?
What are odds a real aftershock hits before any more fuel is removed? Isn’t it like 97% or so, unless they evacuate anything from CSFP or 5/6?

Awakener; Sensei; here was my awakening:

Quote: “Let’s do the math. They can’t get in to start removing this stuff until 2014 at the earliest. There’s approximately a 98% chance of a 7.0 or greater earthquake in the next three years. ”
That was over two and a half years ago. I think we’ve seen a seven point something since, but nothing i remember being ascribed to aftershock of 2011 Tohoku Mega-Disaster.

      Referenced: http://www.physorg.com/news/2012-02-fukushima-quake-.html via: http://enenews.com/expert-m70-quake-spent-fuel-pool-4-collapse-new-study-warns-311-nearby-fault-rip-open

      • Apologies; there were many aftershocks noted.

“One of the biggest aftershocks so far took place as recently as December and had a preliminary magnitude of 7.3, making it a lower 5 on the Japanese scale. This sent nearly 1 meter-high tsunami toward the coastline of Tohoku.”

It does seem like there may be an aftershock >7.0 mag within the next six months from the list of aftershocks (above) alone, at least.

One does wonder what the risk of major earthquake is before defueling starts at another pool though.

        • Apologies; this is not “dud blog”, this is “Bobby’s blog”. Will “stfu” for a while shortly so somebody else can comment.

Quote: “One might well imagine that such disturbance is greatest close to the epicentre of a quake, but this is not the case. The Franco-Japanese study shows that the area where the Earth’s crust suffered the greatest damage was not around Tohoku, in the north-east of Honshu island, but in the volcanic regions, in particular under Mount Fuji, some 400km away. “The volcanic regions are the ones where the fluids trapped in the rock – boiling water, gas, liquid magma, which cause an eruption when they rise to the surface – exert the greatest pressure. The seismic waves add to this pressure, causing even more disturbance,” Brenguier says.”

“So should Japan be on red alert? “We cannot establish a direct relation of cause and effect between quakes and volcanic eruptions, even if statistically the former lead to an increase in the latter,” Brenguier says. “All we can say is that Mount Fuji is now in a state of pressure, which means it displays a high potential for eruption. The risk is clearly higher.”

Science, however, has no way of predicting when this might happen. But there is a precedent. The last eruption of Mount Fuji occurred in 1707. It projected almost a billion cubic metres of ash and debris into the atmosphere, some of which reached Tokyo (then called Edo) 100km away. It was preceded, 49 days earlier, by a magnitude 8.7 quake to the south of Japan that, in conjunction with the tidal wave it raised, claimed more than 5,000 lives. This time, more than three years have already passed since the Tohoku quake. But that does not mean that Mount Fuji, under the constant supervision of Japanese geologists, is slumbering.”

From the linked pdf: Most probably the Pu and the non-natural U found in this study were transported by wind on March 15 and 16 together with the plume of the hydrogen explosion in the Unit 3 reactor, which was equipped with a mixed core of uranium fuel, and mixed uranium and plutonium oxides (MOX).

  11. Text of letter to PM, by Dan Marlin:
    December 11, 2014
    Dear Mr. Abe,
I don’t know if you are familiar with the Native American philosophy of “Seventh Generation.” It means that we need to think ahead when we act, to consider the impact of our behavior not just tomorrow or next year, but seven generations in the future. If we value and respect the Earth, it will continue to provide sustenance to us and to our descendants. But if we continue to wound and poison this planet, those who follow us will inherit an unlivable wasteland.
Nuclear power, whose catastrophic failure at Fukushima has already contaminated the land and sickened people, will leave its toxic residue for thousands of years. Restarting the inactive nuclear power plants in Japan and exporting new plants to other countries invites future tragedy.
The philosophy of “Seventh Generation” tells us to take responsibility for the
future. Unfortunately, your policies ignore the long-term impact of nuclear power and militarism on the Japanese people, at the same time that you seek to erase the truth of their suffering at this moment. The most victimized and vulnerable- those families caught and unable to leave contaminated zones, plagued by worry and guilt because of the invisible radiation that surrounds them – have been erased from the official portrait of Japan.
Because of your government’s lies and obsession with secrecy, the Japanese public is exposed to little or no information about the reality of Fukushima today, and knows less about it than residents of other countries. The less the Japanese public knows or cares- the more, it might seem to you- that you have succeeded in controlling this disaster.
The truth is that lying about a disaster does not make it go away, it just makes it worse. Secrecy is a technique used by politicians everywhere. It is a symptom of spiritual sickness that comes with power and the need to defend power at any cost.
I urge you to abandon secrecy and to instead embrace transparency; to reveal the full truth about Fukushima, including the depth of chaos and contamination that continues at the wrecked reactors, and to direct government resources toward supporting the victims of this ongoing disaster, including medical and resettlement costs. If you are unwilling to do these things, I believe that you should remove yourself from power. You have no right to continue impose your spiritual illness and lack of vision on Japan, the rest of the world, and on the seventh generation of our descendants.
    Sincerely yours,
    Daniel Marlin

  12. Quote (of quote): “Scientists along the Pacific Coast have been trying to determine what is causing the large die-off of the birds this winter.

The University of Washington’s Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team has seen more than 1,200 bodies wash ashore since fall began.

Executive Director Julia Parrish thinks that is only a small fraction of the total number of dead birds. It is probably in the tens of thousands, she said.

Parrish, a professor of marine sciences at the University of Washington, said the die-off was largely a mystery to experts.

The birds have been found mostly starved to death, so the deaths are not a result of an oil spill or a toxic reaction to food, said Lindsay Adrean, a wildlife biologist with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

One explanation is that the birds are starving as a consequence of an unusually successful breeding session last year in British Columbia.”

“But other birds along the coast are not dying at unusual rates, Parrish said.

“If the bottom had fallen out of the ecosystem, you would be seeing everybody dying, but we are not,” she said. “There is a little bit of a mystery to it.””

It’s no mystery to Dana Durnford, for instance.

Quote: “Pairs will show a strong loyalty towards each other and to a nesting site for many years. Both the parents incubate the single white egg, returning to swap shifts at night (usually after 2300 h) to avoid being taken by predators such as the western gull or peregrine falcon.”
… “It feeds by diving underwater beating its wings for propulsion, hunting down large zooplankton, especially krill. It can dive to 30 m below the surface, and by some estimates 80 m.”

I wonder what could have affected the zooplankton.
Oh yeah, Fukushima, which didn’t make the ocean any more alkaline.

Somebody, please open Professor Parrish’s eyes, both of them.

My little voice tells me that this is likely not the first time, nor is it the only FUKUSHIMA … excuse me … media company to (mis)behave in this manner, nor will it be the last, in my humble estimation.

Am hoping you are making further insightful inroads in understanding Myelgic Encephelomyelitis. (almost spelled correctly from memory, not having looked at proper spilling for a month. Ahem! correct spelling: Myalgic Encephalomyelitis)
Also hoping StillJ. is getting regular REM sleep, and perhaps even remembering some of her dreams, perhaps even promoting herself to ‘Director’.

    • I think I understand ME better than most. It doesn’t help much, because the few treatments are too expensive, unavailable, or involve too much mental and physical work to use.

My case is enteroviral, like the paralyzed children who were infected with enterovirus 68. Only it went into the brain first and is only now affecting the spinal cord.

  15. Sugar-based MRI could vastly improve cancer detection
researchers in the new study compared MRI readings from proteins, called mucins, with and without sugars to detect signal changes. Then, they
looked for this signal in four types of lab-grown cancer cells. In these cells they found notably lower levels of mucin-attached sugars when
    compared to normal cells.

    • Yeah, the X-ray analogy is bullshit. I wonder how bad this was. Hanford routinely has plutonium releases inside the plant. This appears to be more serious. How it compares to WIPP, I don’t know.

      • Maybe the analogy isn’t so inept, if one were to internalize the X-Ray source, perhaps?
(i might be laughing on the outside, but on the inside – let’s not go there, as at some points in time my locality is counter-intuitive downwind of Hanford in my estimation, despite the geography.)

Am relieved to see you back. … can’t keep a good person down!
Have had the privlige of “meeting” and talking with so many positively good people here (in my humble opinion; except “Conky”, perhaps) in the face of so many negative topics. Keep up the good work!!!

  16. Artificial small amounts of radioactive material detected in the air sample

Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) has been detected in Kotka without radioactivity monitoring station 4.-11.5. aerosol samples collected small amounts of artificial radioactive substances. In addition, at the same time collected from Sodankylä air sample is detected iodine-131: a. The Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority has confirmed the findings have made little iodine concentration.
The detected radioactive materials are cobalt-60, niobium-95 and cesium-134. The measured levels were in the order of less than miljoonasosabecquereliä cubic meter of air. The amounts are so small that they have no effect on human health. Finnish other monitoring stations measuring results for this period will be completed later. Findings of Kotka and the Midnight Sun are not necessarily related to the same emission source.

There is no safe dose of radiation.

This release is not related to the Chernobyl forest fires. Probably from Fukushima or Ukraine.

  17. Japan Wipes All Investigation and Proceedings Regarding Fukushima from the Public Record

The translation is always a bit rough to read, but you can get the gist of it if you try.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission is the secretariat of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which is responsible for regulations for the safety of the nuclear power business, the predecessor of and the former Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, the past HP of the old Cabinet Office Nuclear Safety Commission, Commission It was found that all were removed from the HP. Tokyo Shimbun pointed out in the October 12 date. According to the newspaper reports, regulatory Agency, the day before the September 19 to be a round three years from the inauguration, it was to remove the HP of the past organization all at once. The deleted HP, standards of safety regulations and disaster prevention, such as the old NISA conference proceedings related to various examination, handouts, and recorded at the time of the Fukushima nuclear accident has been posted.
