Secondary maximum of cesium emissions, Nov 2011 – Apr 2012.

An article has come out in Applied Radiation and Isotopes, Temporal variation of monthly 137Cs deposition observed in Japan: Effects of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident. It appears that monthly cesium-137 depositions in 7 Japanese locations dropped after March 2011, but started to rise again in November.

The third graph refers to resuspension of cesium by month. This refers to cesium deposited on to leaves and trees entering the atmosphere by fire, wind, etc. As you can see, this happens at low levels in November and December.

You might remember the situation in late October 2011 with Abnormal smoke from reactor 2. This was followed shortly by 110 micro Sv/h in Setagaya may be caused by a flown piece of control rod. In Setagaya, Tokyo, not only was there very high radiation detected, but europium-152 was found, which could only have come from a piece of control rod, criticality event, or nuclear explosion.

And this entry for November 1, Breaking News: fission restarted at reactor 2. Xenon was detected (as also happened recently), which confirmed fission was occurring. Of course, Tepco denied it and said it had something to do with curium (which is no picnic either).

In November 2011, the IAEA stated that iodine-131 was detected over Europe (blamed on a Hungarian lab), and in February 2012 they announced it was detected again over northern Sweden (also blamed on Hungarian lab very far away).

So it all adds up to a criticality, the effects being isotopes circling the globe for several months. This time period, especially November thru January was subjectively bad for me, much worse than March-April 2011.

  1. So… now that this secondary maximum is published and discussed in a peer-reviewed journal, maybe all the papers and conferences that assume Fuku ended on April 15, 2011 can now go away. I want to know what all the other isotopes were that were released in this criticality besides cesium.

    The infamous “cold shutdown” declaration was made by Tepco in December 2011 when this was just getting going.

    • Some of the temperature sensors in reactor 2 were declared broken one by one. May be they were the only ones working properly at that time. And there was a nitrogen intervention, because of the building up oxygen.

  2. March of 2012 was the worst for me in the Bay Area, and a lot of people around me. This March/April 2013 was similar.

    In fact, this chart matches most of the increases in my own symptoms and my memory of the Fukushima webcams…August 2011 was terrible, I developed my new autoimmune condition, granuloma annulare (which has reactivated this April after being dormant for months), and remember Nuckelchen’s videos of the horrible releases at the end of October/beg November 2011? Then missing videos and burnt structures in Dec2011/Jan 2012?

    This confirms the accuracy of the human Geiger counters and our own eyes.

  3. When I hear broken rods I think about all the fuel that was blown all over the Fukushima countryside, and I wonder how much Iodine is continually being released from that broken fuel now, and if it is, how long it will continue.
    Not that it really matters, the people there still need to GTFO regardless.

  4. I am not sure if my personal experience can be of help, because people are unique, but reading all these posts about health problems is painful. So, I am not going to recommend my feastings, but will share my favourite herbal tea, I make it from wild rose hips and oregano. I boil half a liter of dried hips in about 3l of water between 5 and 10 min. At the end I add a handfull of dried oregano. The next day I boil again the same hips but just for a couple of minutes and add a new portion of oregano. The hips are ok. to be used 4 days. This is really a powerful antioxidant and vitamin tea, but when I first started to make it, it was because of its great taste and because it effectively prevents common colds. Check the properties of the herbs – they are great, but if it is the right thing for you, you will like the taste.

  5. From a large pdf, p.57:

    “At 4810 m of S1, the highest 134 Cs flux was observed in early May 2011. It was notable that the maximum 134 Cs activity and relatively higher flux was observed in late November and early December 2011.”

    This is 4810 meters deep in the ocean. Cesium-134 was almost 4 times higher in December 2011 than the previous maximum in May 2011.
