  1. What you are looking at is Papiloma virus. A type of herpes virus that plagues green sea turtles. I took care of many in the Fl Keys in the 1980’s with these types of tumors. I’m not saying this is not radiation related because I believe that exposure weakens the immune system.

    • Thanks, Tamara. I’ve seen another picture like this from 2013 I think. The immune dysfunction leads to infections from virus, bacteria, fungi, and parasites, as well as cancer. We shouldn’t expect to see Hiroshima-style burning. These are small radioactive particles that build up in the sea creatures and destroy the DNA and proteins used by immune systems.

  2. It is true that the Fukushima-side coastline of Japan is a major breeding site for many endangered sea turtles!! 🙁

However, I would like to point out that Turtles may be a species that will fare better than others during a radioactive event. During nuclear bomb testing, they found that turtles had many multiples better longevity/survival over other animals/mammals after high radiation exposure! Their shells & bodies are built to protect internal organs and they just fair better as they are cold-blooded and less complicated with their hormonal systems, etc.

I hate to think of anything hurting Sea Turtles (esp. after the BP spill)!!!~~

Another species that should fare well are cockroaches. They tested so much better than humans under radiation that it was astonishing!!…
